Is getting the glaze color you want always a challenge? Working with underglaze and stains we will learn to embrace vibrant color on clay work. We will explore expanding the commercial underglaze palette to create tints, shades and custom colors. Additionally, we will investigate ways to pigment clay bodies and glaze with commercial stains for a greater range of color and success in testing. From mixing to application, this workshop will provide a guide to gaining ceramic color control. This course is open to all skill levels.  Hand-builders and wheel throwers are welcome. 

Schedule:
Day 1:
1. Introductions and icebreakers
2. Discussion – Ceramic Colorants: Stain vs. Oxides
3. Demonstration – how to make pigmented clay
4. Demonstration – how to make color additions by
volume (glaze/slip)
5. Lunch
6. Hands on to make clay color samples/tiles, instructor supported
7. Demonstration – test tiles
8. Student make pigmented clay tests tiles


Day 2:
1. Discussion – Terra Sigillata

2. Demonstration – how to make/apply terra sig.
3. Hands on time to make terra sig. test tiles
4. Lunch
5. Underglaze Discussion – how to break the rules
6. Demonstration – underglaze color mixing
7. Students work on mixing underglaze color samples
8. Students make underglaze test tiles
9. Wrap - up

*Students should be prepared to take home leather hard
work or pick up bisque fired work at a later date. Students
should also bring bone dry pieces/test tiles for terra Sig and
bisque test tiles for underglaze color tests. We will work at
cone 6.


Student Materials List (Suggested Materials):
5-10 bisque tiles/pieces made from cone 6 clay of choice
1-3 bone dry tiles/pieces made from cone 6 clay of choice
Ceramic stains (mason, spectrum, etc.) | 2-4 colors
Xacto knife with *#11 blades
Sketchbook + pen/pencil
Apron, 2 hand towels, sponge
1” – 1.5” Hake Slip brush (2-3)
Various soft bristle brushes
Mudtools: *red and *yellow ribs
10-15 mixing cups with lids (can be recycled food containers)
1 set of measuring spoons
Tools to create surface texture on clay (optional)
